It can be formal or informal. Example: Participation in workshop, conference, Journalism, Sharing experience with friends, Reading professional articles & document. It can be on-job training of off-job training, if any professional development method is planned.

 a) Off job training: Away from own working situation

b) On-job training: In same working, environment, training is held

Activities used for professional growth of development

 1) Induction training

 2) Orientation training

3) In-service education.

4) Continuing education

1) Induction training

Induction training is given to the newly appointed workers given by the employee of the organization about:

•Philosophy of hospital

• Purpose of the organization

 • Rule, Regulation, Policy of organization.

•Duration = 2-3 day

 Objectives

  • To retain the new staff (Longer time)
  • To help new staff to settle down quickly.
  • To help new staff to identify institution’s goals

2) Orientation training

Orientation training helps staff to introduce themselves with organization about supervision, with whom they have to work, and abouttheir task.

Objectives

  1. To help staff to get appointed with organization

 Duration varies according to working.

It is given in 3 Stages.

1) Orientation of overall organization: include philosophy & history of organization, Mission goals, objectives & organizational structures.Personal information = Personal Policy, procedure, compensation issues, incomes, benefits & facilities.

2) Orientation to specific department: Functions, activities, policies, rules of regulation are discussed and staffs is taken for a visit of the physical environment.

3) Orientation to specific job to hold: Detailed explanation of job based on the job description, responsibilities, performance standard, record & report, and who will be your immediate supervisor, regarding supplies material, rules

3) In-service education

It is a planned educational experiences provided in a you setting closely related to the service / job given by institution so that nurses can work effectively/properly of improve their work performance

 Objectives:

1) Promotion of personal & professional growth &development.

2) To stimulate interest in a job.

3) For job satisfaction

4) To increase competence.

5) To increase knowledge, skill, Attitude in work setting.

 Areas of In-service education

-Skill training

– Leadership &Mgmt

– Safety training.

-Orientation (sometimes)

4) Continuing Education programme

 It is taken after completion of basic professional education to improve competency, knowledge, skill, Attitude & chances our professional performance.

Benefits:

-It bridges gap between knowledge and demand of service.

-It will be able to provide qualitative nursing service

-It improves communication skill which are important.

Process to be followed before conducting any program.

 1) Assessment: Identify what is the need of organization and employees need in which areas.

Assessment can be done bydiscussing with employees or higher authority or keys supervisor, record, Observation, Surveys, Questionnaire, Perform Test

2. Designing

-Set objectives of the programme.

-Activities you want to do to teach those activities

-Includes background areas, target group, trainer, activities, topics to be included, How will you teach, Contents, Method, Budget

3) Implementation:

Execute the task

4) Evaluation

May be formative (immediately after training) &summative (actual performance/situation)

Roles of Nurse Manager/ administrator to Professional Growth

 In any programme, the organizer should think thatthe trainee are Adult so the principles of adult learning should be applied. While teaching focus on particular areas which isdeficit and use new techniques which will help staff to empower themselves. One has to frequently assess the trainee performance.
